Instagram’s Edits Video Editor Arrives on Mac With Multi-Track Timeline and 4K Exports

Instagram is expanding its video-editing platform beyond smartphones. Its Edits app is now available on macOS, bringing a desktop editing experience to creators who prefer working on a larger screen.

The move is a significant expansion for Meta’s video-editing app, which originally launched on iOS and Android as a competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut. The Mac release introduces a more advanced editing environment while retaining several features designed around Instagram’s creator ecosystem.

Multi-Track Timeline and More Editing Control

One of the biggest additions is a multi-track editing timeline, giving creators more flexibility when arranging video clips, audio and other elements.

The desktop version also includes detailed audio waveforms, making it easier to align sound with footage, as well as keyboard shortcuts for a faster editing workflow.

Creators also get colour-grading tools for adjusting the visual appearance of their videos, alongside support for multiple aspect ratios. This makes it easier to prepare content for different platforms and formats without relying entirely on a mobile editing workflow.

4K Exports Without Watermarks

Edits for Mac supports 4K video exports without watermarks, allowing creators to produce high-resolution content without adding an Edits branding mark to their finished videos.

The app also retains access to Instagram’s audio library, direct publishing and saved audio and text styles from the mobile experience.

These integrations could make it particularly useful for creators producing Instagram Reels and other social media content.

AI-Assisted Editing Comes to the Desktop

Another interesting addition is support for AI agents through an MCP interface.

This allows compatible AI assistants, including Meta’s Muse, to help assemble rough video cuts. Creators can then move into Edits to refine the footage and make their own creative decisions.

Rather than completely replacing manual editing, the AI integration is designed to help with parts of the production process, potentially reducing the time spent organising footage and preparing initial edits.

A Few Limitations to Consider

Despite the desktop expansion, Edits is not yet a complete replacement for professional video-editing software.

One notable limitation is that projects cannot currently be edited seamlessly between the mobile and Mac versions. Meta says cross-platform project editing is in development.

The desktop release is also currently limited to macOS, with no Windows desktop version announced in the launch coverage.

What This Means for Content Creators

Bringing Edits to Mac makes Instagram’s editing ecosystem more appealing to creators who prefer working on desktop computers.

The combination of a multi-track timeline, colour grading, audio tools, AI-assisted rough cuts and watermark-free 4K exports gives Edits a more capable desktop workflow than its original mobile-only experience.

For creators who primarily produce short-form videos, the app could become a convenient option for preparing content for Instagram without moving between several editing applications.

However, established editors such as DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro still offer considerably more advanced production capabilities.

With the Mac release, Meta is taking another step towards making Edits a more complete video-creation platform rather than just a mobile companion for Instagram users.
